This novel traces the life of the Person family from a canine vantage point as the family moves from Depression-era Brooklyn through the homefront years of World War II, from pre-Levittown Long Island to a bachelor’s life in New York City, from parts unknown to the present day. Suburban existence is not without temptation and trouble for both human and animal. All breeds are survivors—especially mutts. Some dogs chafe at the boundaries intended to protect them; others willfully follow the kind hand all the way to the executioner. All are worthy of being called members of the family Person.
